STATUE OF LIBERTY

STATUE OF LIBERTY

If the Statue of Liberty could talk,

What would she say to citizens today?

She might say, “I would not give the keys to my heart

To everyone by capricious whim.

There are those I would keep out,

And those I would invite in.

I would open the doors each day

And smile at those who come to work or pray,

An island greeting those who are ready to share,

The opportunities and love discovered here.

Those who come with bigotry and hate

And those who haven’t learned to celebrate

Differences,

I would ask them to wait.

My land is home for the weary, a place of hope,

A place they can adjust and learn to cope,

A place to shake fear from timid heart,

Leaving violence behind and getting a new start.

The keys to my heart would only be given

To those with new lives to begin.

This country was founded on blood, grit, and tears.

On that basis I have lasted for years.

To those who are here to prey

And steal all precious dreams away,

There should not be left any doubt.

I would select many to come in,

But there are those I would keep out.”

COLLABORATION

COLLABORATION (MEDICAL version)

So many people with numerous degrees,
Acknowledgements, honors and pedigrees,
Each contributing with all they do,
Unselfish and willing, just like you.
Climbing and wending their way to the top,
Gaining a life-long education that will never stop.
Research rewarded by new found cures,
Insatiable curiosity that will always endure.
All are determined to become the very best
At their own specialties, beyond the rest.
They work as teams though miles apart,
Connected by love, working heart to heart.
Not at the expense of others they’ve joined along the way,
Instead, locking arms and reaching above yesterday.
In unison they march, pushing barriers aside,
Creating new tomorrows, prejudices denied.
The future promises more to those that share,
Their resources combined offer superior care.
United they stand in all that they do,
Unselfish and willing, just like you.
Not just for the moment but for always,
Providing patients with longer and better days.
Many qualified specialists linked by their expertise,
Means patients are the winners in conquering disease.

ANOTHER DAY

I’ve been given another day
To work, love, or waste it away.
It’s my choice
And there’s no pressure
from any source.
Should I undo any wrongs I’ve done?
I’ll never fill my bucket
With good deeds.
So why the bonus day,
When I see others more likely
To do good?
There are doctors, lawyers,
Mechanics, Ordinary guys,
Who serve others without asking why.
So why am I given this bonus day?
What makes me special?
I have no answers that suffice,
But my heart is warm and will melt
Any ice
That I encounter today.
Hello, welcome to my world.
There’s always room for another friend.
Tomorrow, I’ll love and laugh
And welcome another day
If one should happen to come my way.
